Abstract

Background: Pregnancies at the extremes of reproductive age increase the risk of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Objective: To determine peripartum obstetric complications according to age groups in the Hospital Materno Infantil (January 2019-2024). Materials and methods: Case-control study with patients <19 and >35 years (cases) and 25-29 years (controls). Proportions, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were estimated. Results: 208 cases and 208 controls were evaluated. Mean age: 16.0 (<19 years), 39.0 (>35 years) and 27.0 (controls). The main complications were Urinary tract infection in 26.4% in cases vs. 17.8% in controls (P=0.033), low birth weight in 38.9% in cases vs. 29.8% in controls (P=0.049), perineal tears 26.0% in cases vs. 15.4% in controls (P=0.007), postpartum hemorrhage in 13 .0% in cases vs. 7.2% in controls (P=0.037). Conclusions: Complications associated with reproductive age included perineal tears, urinary tract infection, low birth weight, and postpartum hemorrhage.
